Amidst the whining about funding for travel and hints at organizational bumbling, it would seem that the now canceled premier International Celtic Festival of Las Vegas pipe band invitational has much to grapple with besides a disgruntled piping community.
Quick poll: How many pipers play piobaireachd by taking their instructor’s interpretation and/or following the Piobaireachd Society setting without question? One of the more interesting aspects you find upon deeper study of ceol mor is the fact that the interpretations of the tunes are not fixed and have been expressed differently by just about every individual who has compiled or taught the tunes over the centuries.
Folks love the pomp of the decked out piper in full regalia, don’t they. Sometimes the image of the performing piper looking the part in a well pressed kilt and flags on the drone cords is enough for an appreciative audience—even if he/she sounds like rubbish on the bagpipe.
